Kenya meets Krautronics: Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek bring African rhythms into dark electronica
Under the auspices of the Goethe Institute and Unesco, Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek have spent a fair amount of time in Kenya in recent years. As they travelled the country, they recorded rare, traditional music in different locations, subsequently releasing two albums of unembellished field recordings to document their findings.
«Shadows Documents» takes a different approach: Schneider and Kacirek graft their acoustically gleaned impressions of Kenya onto pure electronic templates (with analogue accents). Field recordings as such cannot be heard. A central role is played by the repetitive, hypnotic element which is so integral to tribal music with its complex rhythms. Both musicians share a fascination with these very rhythms, a recurring theme in their careers to date: clearly audible in Stefan Schneider’s work with Kreidler and To Rococo Rot, as well as on his albums with Hans-Joachim Roedelius. In Kacirek’s case we can look to his solo albums for evidence, in particular on the much lauded «Kenya Sessions».

The duo’s modus operandi differs from that of renowned Krautrock pairings such as Dieter Moebius/Mani Neumeier or Michael Rother/Klaus Dinger (= NEU!), where the drum kit plays a dominant role as the driving force. With Schneider and Kacirek, drums mutate into a sort of synthesizer instrument, almost subliminally melting into the sound of other instruments as a virtual observer, adding a certain nuance here and there, rather than performing a more catalytic function. Played with greater restraint, the drums create variations, translating physique into precision. Synthesizers, meanwhile, assume many of the percussive duties.
A prominent guest musician joins the duo on one track. Niklas Addo Nettey, a Berlin resident since the early 1980s, played with Fela Kuti 70.

Hamburg’s percussionist and dance music composer Sven Kacirek coined a new genre of electronic music that uses world music as one of the elements. The Palmin Sessions (Pingipung, 2007) and The Kenya Sessions (Pingipung, 2011) mix live percussion, electronic sounds, digital programming and field recordings of folk music into smooth and atmospheric structures that resemble post-rock songs.Kacirek played all the instruments on Scarlet Pitch Dreams (Kompakt, 2012) with little or no studio magic except for the widespread littering of found sounds. The choice of timbres (like the xylophone) and of hinted melodies (if not fully fledged refrains) shapes detached kitsch music that mocks neoclassical music and film soundtracks of the 1960s (About You and Me, Or Other Stirring Or Boring Tales). It is not quite the jovial postmodernist nostalgia of the Penguin Cafè Orchestra, but a more radical reconstruction and decontextualization of sonic stereotypes. Elsewhere (It Is Not About Love, the seven-minute Cars & Nightingales, the nocturnal and ethereal Embraces Eleven Ideas) Kacirek indulges in an original fusion of skittering African polyrhythms and jazz-rock. The ethnic motiv peaks with the intricate percussive patterns and ethereal female vocals of Scarlet Pitch Dreams. Sometimes the percussion virtually disappears, revealing the glitchy interferences that were not obvious in the other pieces: hence the piano elegy Turned Into What You Listen To and the martial piano meditation of Turned Into What You Listen To.

Sven Kacirek (* 1975 in Hamburg) ist ein deutscher Schlagzeuger, Produzent, Buchautor und Dozent. Kacirek studierte bei Jost Nickel an der Yamaha Music Station (Hamburg), bei Kim Plainfield am Drummers Collective (New York City), bei René Créemers und Joop van Erven (Arnheim) sowie bei Udo Dahmen an der Musikhochschule in Hamburg. Sven Kacirek spielte 1999 und 2000 auf dem World Drum Festival und widmete sich in den folgenden Jahren der akustischen Umsetzung programmierter Drumbeats verschiedener Stilistiken wie Drum and Bass, House, Elektro oder Trip Hop. Er veröffentlichte die Bücher Drum´n bass-Creative Concepts For Drummers (Alfred Publ. 2000) und Secret Drum Grooves (Alfred Publ. 2004). Mit dem Hamburger Projekt field veröffentlichte er die Alben Cocoon und Trespass, sowie die EP Stretch Your Hands Out. 2007 erschien sein erstes Soloalbum The Palmin Sessions bei Pingipung/Kompakt, A-Musik. Ferner arbeitete Sven Kacirek in den letzten Jahren in diversen Projekten für die Choreographinnen Angela Guerreiro und Silke Z.. Neben diesen aktiven Musikalischen besetzt Kacirek ebenfalls eine Dozentenstelle an der Hamburg School of Music.
